Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, the Rhineland seat of an electoral court. He was the eldest of three children of Johann and Maria Magdalena van Beethoven. His father, a musician and taught him to play piano and violin he was his first music teacher and a tenor in the electoral musical establishment, harbored ambitions to create in his second son a prodigy like Mozart. When he was only 12 he was a promising keyboard virtuoso and a talented pupil in composition of the court musician C. G. Neefe. In 1792 Beethoven went back to Vienna to study with the famous composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). Beethoven was not totally satisfied with Haydn’s teaching, though, and he turned to musicians of lesser talent for extra instruction. Beethoven rapidly proceeded to make his mark as a brilliant keyboard performer and as a gifted young composer. His first mature published works appeared In 1795, and his career was officially launched. He became deaf at the age of 48 reason was unknown, but has variously been attributed to typhus, auto-immune disorders (such as systemic lupus erythematosus), and even his habit of immersing his head in cold water to stay awake. Beethoven’s deafness and his temper contributed to his reputation as an unpleasant personality.
