Thomas Cavanagh was born on October 26th, 1963 in Ottawa, Ontario, the second-oldest of five children. His close-knit family moved to Ghana, Africa when Tom was six. His father educated teachers there. The family moved back to Canada before Tom started high school (which he attended in southern Quebec). His parents worked as teachers in Third World countries for most of his childhood. He spent many years in Ghana. In 1989, he appeared in the Broadway revival of “Shenandoah” which gained him some recognition. Tom went to Queens University in Kingston, Ontario where he played on the basketball team and graduated with degrees in English, Biology, and Education. His interest in theater grew when he was cast as the lead Danny Zuko in a Canadian “Grease”. Since then, he has been in a moderate amount of movies, but is gaining popularity for his starring, award-winning role on the new NBC series Ed (2000), in which he plays the lovable, charming Ed Stevens. In his spare time he likes to play guitar and participate in a variety of sports. He is currently (2016) a main cast member on the CW series The Flash (2014). He lives in Vancouver with his wife and their four children. He starred in the Lifetime Movie Network television miniseries The Capture Of The Green River Killer in which he portrayed King County sheriff David Reichert. In March 2006, Cavanagh filmed My Ex-Life, a comedy pilot for CBS about a divorced couple who remain friends. The pilot featured Lost actress Cynthia Watros as his ex-wife. CBS did not select the show for its fall 2006 schedule. Cavanagh portrayed the lead role Nick Snowden (the heir to the Santa Claus identity) in the made-for-TV movie Snow in 2005, which is shown annually on the Family Channel.
